BLACK SABBATH- DEVIL YOU KNOW- 2009 *RHINO*

Finally!  We get the new Sab…er, I mean Heaven and Hell album.  I still have a hard time calling this incarnation Heaven and Hell, but oh well, Technical issues aside, When I first heard that Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice were writing and recording new material I was thrill to say the least.

Let’s go back 29 years to July 19th, 1980 for a minute.  I was 18 years old and was able to go to the infamous Black and Blue tour when it hit Seattle at the Memorial Stadium.   Black Sabbath/Blue Oyster Cult/Molly Hatchet/Riot.  What a festival that was….they should have ran with it and called it Sabfest.  I have always been a huge Sabbath fan.  I love the ozzy albums, the dio albums and worship the “Born Again” album with Gillan on vocals.  Yes, even the Tony Martin ones I enjoyed and still enjoy to this day.  But somehow the material with Dio just stands out.  Fucking heavy and very memorable.  The band are magic when they are together!!

Indeed, It was a great day in heavy metal when the members reunited in 2007 after 15 years and started touring.  They recorded a couple of new songs and put out a DVD and double live CD of their show at Radio City Music hall.   What a fine collection of material spanning  the 3 albums with Dio and the new tunes.

“The Devil you Know” comes at great time, just a month before late spring hits and summer is around the corner.  And it’s a scorcher.  Blown away  for me is an understatement.  The more I listen to this, the more killer it gets!!  The album kicks off with “Atom and Evil” which offers one of Iommi’s heaviest riff since the early seventies.  It just makes the hair on your neck stand up. Other heavy hitters on “Devil you Know” are the single “Bible Black” (with showcases vocalist Ronnie James Dio magical vocals and harmonies),  “Follow The Tears” once again we find a heavy, crushing, doom filled track that fucking rules. The song Double the Pain kicks ass, really catchy.   The closing number is nothing short of magnificent.  “Breaking into Heaven”, which features some very sick solos courtesy of Mr. Tony Iommi.    In fact, Iommi shines on this entire album.  The entire band do actually.  It’s a tight and solid album.  Any fan of the Sabbath material with Dio at the helm can enjoy this new album from Heaven and Hell.  I highly recommend it.

I am looking forward to seeing Heaven and Hell headline the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany and then also here in Seattle on August 8th, look for pictures and reviews in the future here…
